We have made no secret of the fact that we love bikes!

We also love the lifestyle and freedom afforded us by our bicycles. Wheels transform us into the swift and agile beings we dream of being. Soaring through city streets and zipping around town can’t avoid making one feel good, healthy, and putting a smile on just about any face.

There is a lifestyle associated with urban cycling and along with it comes health benefits, fun, and environmental benefits.

But…,

while your bike may be a really great companion and an effective tool for helping you reduce your personal environmental impact, there are some pretty inefficient truths about the way that the cycling industry is structured.

“Bicycles are wonderful machines and we want to see them enrich the lives of our customers, but we strive to do so in a manner that addresses their social and environmental footprint.”

At Coh&Co we are doing our best to come to terms with the environmental challenges presented by energy-intensive materials and the inherent inappropriacies of a global supply chain. Bicycles are wonderful machines and we want to see them enrich the lives of our customers but we strive to do so in a manner that addresses their social and environmental footprint.

Coh&Co is a small business and as we strive to improve ourselves and our products, we find ourselves engaged in a never-ending process where we develop and evaluate every aspect of our bikes and our business.

This can be anything from frame geometry or hardware choices to colors, logos, or transportation; and in doing so we have discovered that our first primary area of focus in regards to improving our environmental impact is to improve upon and compensate the CO2 impact of the distribution and redistribution of our products and their components.

“Made in Denmark?!”

While in an ideal world we would love to do everything here at home in Copenhagen, and do so with locally sourced materials; the truth of the matter is that doing this would make it really difficult to produce a better bicycle and such a bicycle would be disproportionately expensive.

Therefore we are accepting of the fact that there are some great suppliers that have developed significant expertise in manufacturing components for the bicycle industry and that if we are to make a dynamic product and navigate in a global market place then we need to accept a global supply chain. It is in acceptance of this truth that we evaluate and make decisions about what components to purchase and where to manufacture.

While we have considerable production capacity and manufacture much of our “model specific” components in-house here in Denmark, we must also restrain ourselves and focus on the job of making a good product that is affordable enough to reach the streets in numbers that are viable for all involved.

“Orchestrating a balance between design, innovation, materials science, supply chain, market demographics, and the associated environmental and social footprint of all of these combined is a task where we have chosen to source some help and inspiration.”

This is where and why we have turned to 1% for the Planet.

1% for the Planet member

1% for the Planet is a global community of businesses, individuals and organizations that have pledged to contribute at least 1% of their annual turnover to preserving the environment and reducing the global environmental burden.

In joining the organization Coh&Co has opened the door to a resource that can help us to better evaluate our own environmental footprint and that of our business model, and channel our resources effectively into acting on improving ourselves. Currently, our focus is on understanding the CO2 footprint of the logistics in our bicycles product life cycle – including that of our supply chain and distribution.

We look forward to reducing these emissions to zero through the planting of trees. While this may seem all good and well we also focus on reducing our transport emissions by evaluating transportation alternatives and attempting to coordinate shipping efforts to reduce unnecessary transport emissions.

This in itself raises questions of which trees, where, how many, and why?!

1% for the Planet is more than just a pledge of money – it is a resource that affords us the opportunity to integrate our environmental questions and action with daily business and maintain focus.

We look forward to intermittently telling the story of our journey and hopefully, it will inspire others to join us as we have gained inspiration from others.

Although not referring to the environmental impact, we can reflect upon our position in the world in the words of the quote below:

“We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our bodies. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
